Premier Michael Dunkley welcomed the new all-electric BMW i3 to Bermuda at an exclusive launch event at Ultimate Motors on Friday night, and encouraged Bermudians to think seriously about “going green”.
He said: "We need to do all we can as a community to improve on our carbon footprint here in Bermuda. I think the challenge is that people need to have options that they’re comfortable with.”
The Premier added: “There’s a lot we can do to protect our home that we love so much, whether its solar panels or electric cars because in the last 5 or 10 years, the feasibility and payback for these things is really starting to be something we need to take a close look at."
Having been driven in a BMW i3 during an America’s Cup event in Portsmouth, England (BMW is a Global Partner of the 35th America’s Cup and Technology Partner of Oracle Team USA), Mr. Dunkley said he had been impressed with the i3’s space and style compared to some other electric vehicles. “I look forward to see how consumers take to the BMW i3. With everything that BMW brings to the table, I’m sure it will stand the test of time.”
Krishna King, General Manager of Bermuda Motors and Ultimate Motors, said the BMW i3 was “not just a new BMW. It represents a new, bold direction for BMW, one that seeks to reinvent urban mobility with an exciting range of battery electric (BEV) and plugin hybrid vehicles (PHEV)
“BMW i is a comprehensive and ground-breaking concept for visionary electric vehicles, inspiring design and sustainable mobility. Its mission has been to forget what went before and rethink everything.
“For the first time, an overall concept for saving energy was developed; previously, the approach only involved integrating energy-saving techniques into existing models. The body and the drive system were specially developed, with the focus on energy-saving.
“The entire life cycle of BMW i vehicles is guided by the principle of maximum conservation of resources and sustainability at every stage of production. The BMWi3 is the only automobile worldwide that uses 70% less water, 50% less energy and 100% renewable electricity for production compared to a conventional BMW at its Leipzig plant in Germany.”
First launched in 2013, the BMW i3 is now the world’s best-selling BEV in the Premium Compact BEV segment with more than 60,000 sold. The BMW i3 has won two World Car of the Year Awards, selected as 2014 World Green Car of the Year and also as 2014 World Car Design of the Year. The i3 was also given an iF Product Design Gold Award, and, in the first UK Car of the Year Awards, it won in two categories: UK Car of the Year 2014 and Best Supermini of 2014.
BMW i is driving the future of BMW and technologies like PHEV eDrive have already been successfully transferred to the X5, 7, 5, 3 and 2 Series and will be featured in the upcoming Mini PHEV 2017 and Mini BEV 2019.
